ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE OUR CHOOSE CIVILITY BOOK CLUB EXPERIENCE: Enlightening, Lifted Spirits, Intergeneration, Inspiring, Interesting, Respect, Happy, Forgiveness, New/Thought Provoking, Exciting, Encouraged

WOW! What a great time we had in our first Choose Civility Book Club. I would like to thank a few people who made this book club possible. First and foremost I send a huge thank you to the parents and students that joined this effort. Thank you for participating in the meetings and discussions. You're willingness to give up some of your mornings for meetings and working around your busy schedules to read the chapters and blog showed your dedication.

To my fellow colleagues, thank you for the support and your sacrifice of time in and out of school. Your participation didn't just speak volumes to me, but also demonstrated your passion for education to our community.

Last but certainly not least, thank you to the administration and office staff of Atholton Elementary School for allowing this opportunity to take place. The support that Mrs. Balter, Mrs. Anoff, and Mrs. Ford displayed were valuable and appreciated by all.

What was the best part of this book for you? If you could ask or tell the author one thing, what would it be?

If you were Rosemary's mother, how would you of handled the situation on pages 138-139? What would you say to Grace's father to help him adopt civility?

Chapter 8

Why do you think Grace and Rosemary are attracting so many friends in this chapter? What civility traits do you think are attracting people to them?

What do you think about Grace's experience at Rosemary's Christmas Party? How did her perceptions play a part in her experience?

CHALLENGE

For the next two weeks, I challenge you to choose one of the civility principles and make an effort to practice it daily. Record any specific moments that arise from this challenge and come prepared to share your experience at our April 3rd meeting.

How are Grace and Rosemary's situations alike? How are these similarities shaping their friendship?

Do you think Grace agrees with her father's behavior on pages 116 and 117? How should she deal with this?

Chapter 6

Explain how Mr. Bob showed the civility principle, "think the best" in the events on page 89?

Chapter 5

Have you ever had to be first at something new? How did it make you feel? Did you use any civility principles to get through it?

What principles of civility are Grace and Katherine lacking on pages 77-79? How could they correct it?

Chapter 4

Have you ever encountered a "Mr. Keggley"? What civility principle(s) should he adopt?

Have you ever said anything to a friend you later regretted or broken a promise to someone you really care about? How should Rosemarie handle the situation?

Chapter 3

In the event on pages 33-35, what civility principle is Rosemarie and her father displaying? Tell us about a time when you displayed this same principle in your life. How did it make you feel? What would you do if you found a cat in the same condition Rosemarie found the cat on the railroad track?

On pages 38-39, Rosemarie and J.J. have an encounter with the Hamiltons. Is it okay for Rosemarie and J.J. to be mean to the Hamiltons because they are mean to them? Why or why not? Do you think words hurt?

Chapter 2

Do you think there will be a female president in the near future? Why or why not? Based on Rosemary and J.J.'s conversation on page 24, how do you think they would feel about our current president?
